Decided that I'll attempt to draw Elmo, Cookie Monster and Super Grover some time in the near future. I've never really noticed how diverse the character designs were within the Sesame Street main character lineup. Not only in color but in shape. From the furry Elmo, to the human-like Count von Count, to the googley eyed Cookie Monster (who for some reason is the only muppet with 5 fingers on each hand). I wanted to draw the characters as muppet-like as I could. Meaning that I wanted to keep them looking artificial and man-made, yet still retain the life-like mannerisms as on the show. (I reworked Elmo from the previous sketch cause he was looking a bit raggedy.) The more I researched Jim Henson and his company of puppeteers, the more I realize the great work they've done. It's amazing what they were able to do with these muppets, considering the majority of the characters do not even have a full range of facial movements or eyebrows. Especially with usually just a flap for a mouth. I've been playing around with the idea of altering the shape of their hands to be larger, and more human-like with proper articulation and joints. Should be a fun one to do!

Thought I should put in some time to do a few sketching exercises to practice Sesame Street characters for the nephews and niece. Besides drawing Elmo off the top of my head for the kids, I don't recall having ever drawn these characters before even as a child. (My childhood days were spent drawing Transformers and He-Man figures). Through these studies I was able to research the career and works of Jim Henson. Added the finishing touches to the piece. Used a calligraphy pen dipped in thinned white acrylic paint to draw in the knee swirls and cape tie strings. Also cleaned up some lines, put a second coat of paint on a few areas and last but not least gave it a matte finishing coat to seal the 4" mini Munny using Krylon's Matte Finishing spray. I've entered this piece in kidrobot's MunnyWorld MegaContest. The contest also has a People's Choice Award category which you can vote by "Liking" it (click on the "Like" button for your favorite mini Munny design) here. Working on another design at the moment for a second entry. I'll be using a familiar medium and technique for my second D.I.Y.: acrylic paints/brush work. Style-wise, I'll be trying something more painterly and realistic this time around. I'll keep you posted.

On a side note, Kazuhiko Ito of Itokin Park fame checked out my blog! He was thankful for the shoutout I gave him awhile back. Can't wait for my Crazy Sparkle Lucha Bear to arrive. As of now, it's sold out.

Besides washing the Munny's pieces with dishwashing soap (can use any soap that foams), I didn't do any other prep work (gesso or sand) before working on the mini Munny. I then used a graphite pencil to draw on the vinyl toy and used the marker right on top. I put down the grays first, so that I could use the black to smooth out the outlines. The acrylic markers go on opaque, so you can use the gray on top of the black. You want to avoid reworking an area multiple times to reduce marker overlapping, to avoid acrylic paint buildup and caking. As I was progressing I noticed that the mouth I drew was a bit too low and wasn't wide enough, making him look a bit goofy. I decided to paint over it, which turned out to be a good decision. Biggest stress was to draw the straight lines for the hair on a rounded surface. There's a few imperfections, but it turned out well overall. Next step to finish off the piece is to clean up some lines, add the knee swirl marks and apply a matte finish before submitting to the kidrobot MunnyWorld MegaContest.

My attempt to conform the original character sketch to the shape of a 4" mini Munny. I decided to invert the body's black & white tones from the original sketch to balance out the head. I'm happy with how it turned out, but I'm still a bit worried about how it'll look in 3 dimensions. This will be my first attempt at customizing a toy, with a year's worth of information gathering and prep work. Because it is my first time working on a D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) Munny, I've decided to also work with acrylic paint markers as my choice of medium. Because the subject is so small, I'm hoping I'll have more control using the acrylic paint markers instead of brushes. Let's hope it works out...

A character sketch I came up with while brainstorming for a design to use in kidrobot's MunnyWorld MegaContest, which runs from April 1st till April 30th. I wanted to incorporate some of the design/style themes from my Thought Processor paper toy colorway along with my reoccuring design themes. I thought it would be interesting to use graphic elements such as the linear hatched hair, the large panda patch eyes and swirl nose on a rounded surface of a mini Munny. He was turning into a Mexican luchador wrestler with the mask-like face and cape. The boxing gloves still fit in with the Mexican fighter theme, so I added the Sumo wrestling diaper for good measure...

Here's a couple of preliminary sketches to get the ideas flowing when I started work on the Eric Broers "Thought Processor" project. The concept was a 1940's angry French Octopus. Part of why he was so disgruntled was that he had stubby tentacles. On top of that one of them was even shorter than the rest due to a birth defect... Like I said, it was a launching point. I liked how the curly handlebar moustache looked like curled up fists, as seen in some cartoons depicting old school boxers.

New Sketchbook!

Was looking for a new sketchbook to do a lot of inking on. Mainly Sharpie pens and liquid white out. Hard to find a good quality sketchbook that doesn't bleed through, especially a small format book with lots of pages. Was told of the Moleskine sketchbook, known for it's smooth, yellow tinted paper which surprisingly holds ink very well. The sketch of Totoro (shown up above) gave it the biggest test so far. The paper did bleed a bit, but not much. So far, so good.

Wanted to play around with the vinyls again with the iPhone. I found the last set of photos seemed like product beauty shots. This time around I wanted to try to play more with lighting and dramatic angles to get a better sense of mood. I was very happy with the Hellboy shot. I used natural lighting with a half closed curtain to get the matted reflection off of my flat screen television as a backdrop. Hoping that I will be able to recreate this shot with my SLR camera so that I may be able to make a large print of it. The difficulty in that task is that I used natural light, the SLR is less forgiving and I do not have a macro lens. Will keep you posted...

PhotoForge: Curves

Many people have asked me for tips & tricks regarding photo retouching. Color adjustments, light balancing, masking, cropping for composition. There's no real fixed formula you can use for every photograph because each shot has their own nuances, mainly due to lighting. Techniques such as masking may seem easy at first but difficult to do seemlessly. Retouching requires a good eye and patience. Most of it is tedious when you get the hang of it. For this blog posting I'll share a tip for highlight balancing using a basic tool such as the PhotoForge App on the iPhone. I mainly use Photoshop on my PC for retouching photos,. The reason why I'm using the iPhone this time around, is to demonstrate how easily it can be done with such a simple tool. I prefer the PhotoForge app over the Photoshop app on the iPhone, because I find the Photoshop app on the iPhone is limited in functions.

As you can see in the Before & After shot the highlights are washed out and the subject loses a lot of the tonal gradations. Notice the whites on the head, as well as the hilights on the body and right arm. When the hilights are blasted like that the colors also tend to become over saturated. Although saturation in color may be desired at times, it loses softness in an organic shape as well as a natural realistic look if that is to be intended.

Open the PhotoForge app. Open the image you want to adjust. Click on the "Filter" tab (looks like a funnel, middle icon at the bottom). Click on "Curves". (For Photoshop on the PC: navigate to Layer/New Adjustment Layer/Curves...). This is your "Curves" graph, which you can adjust the image as whole, or if you want indivual colors as well. For this demo we'll be adjusting the image as a whole, so keep your default settings on "RGB" and "All". Click and drag to add or move a bezier point on the graph. Multiple points can be applied to the same graph. Shown above is the general reverse S Curve I would usually apply when adjusting for highlight balancing, with tweaks depending on the lighting in the shot. I find it works really well for organic smooth surfaces and portraits.

Final Illustration

This is the final for the illustration portion of the poster. I've added a few small details, as well as some volume using shadow. I wanted the character to be a bear, but also to look like someone who was wearing a bear suit. The flap in the front and the tip at the back of his head was to simulate a hooded sweatshirt with ears. Also, thanks to my colleague Patrick (concept artist) for suggesting to add the layered semi-transparent snowflakes at the base of the gradating background. It helped break up the monotony of a basic gradation, and gave it some interest.

Colour Me Purple

I wanted the poster to be vibrant without it having to be too colourful, so to not distract from the intended purpose which is the information. Orson is a bear. The name "Orson" is a play on the French word for bear, "ourson". It was between that or "René", which at the time sounded like it would fit well for a traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras. Ok back to the bear. I went in colouring having a classic brown bear in mind. But after the first colouring pass I felt it was a bit too...normal. I thought of other colours and settled on a desaturated violet. I thought that other, more vibrant colours would make him look too much like one of the "Care Bears". I felt the violet version had more character and presence, but had a bit of doubt on whether or not he would read as a bear. Asking for advice from a colleague (concept artist), I was reassured that violet was the direction to go. Thanks Carolyn!

Pencil Pushers Unite

Based on the original thumbnail sketch I would usually redraw the illustration (cleaner and more detailed) traditionally using graphite on paper. Scan it. Retouch the lines in photoshop. And start colouring. For this piece I wanted something very clean, without having to use vectors. Personally I find vectors too clean, and my vision was for a traditional 2D cell shaded look. So I decided to go digital for the redraw. Not to say that you can't get a clean look from traditional methods, such as inking. But truthfully, my inking skills are not good enough to allow me to work as fast as my deadline permitted. The snowflakes are in fact vector illustrations, which I have previously created for a past project. Helped shave a lot of valuable time off my schedule.

First Draft

This was the first draft submission for the "mini Mardi Gras" poster composition and text layout. The poster met with a few challenges to overcome. 12"X18" final size, but mainly having to work on a bilingual (French & English) poster. Having both languages takes up more real estate, especially with a poster which isn't that big. I decided to split the text down the middle and to keep it at the bottom. Depending on the height that the poster is posted on a wall, I placed the text at the bottom to insure legibility.

The Life of Orson

The next few posts will be dedicated to the poster I'm currently working on for a non profit charity fundraiser, in support of "The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation. It's a worthy cause which will help out many of the kids who are in need, especially at a scary time in their young lives. Hopefully the work that the fund raising organization is doing will help ease their time spent in the hospital, as well as their recovery outside of it.

The images I've posted are the character design sketches for a mascot, created for the organization's upcoming event. I pretty much had free reign for this project concerning the subject matter. The briefing I was given was that the event will be themed as a "mini Mardi Gras" for children...in February. My first question was "Isn't Mardi Gras a mature theme?". Apparently it dates back to Ancient Rome as "Lupercalia", which I won't be getting into. So with the knowledge that Mardi Gras was not all dirty, I was ready to work on the poster. Inspired by the upcoming 2010 Olympics mascots as well as my nephew, I made my first sketches while on break in a "Texture & Shading course" at work. Yes, they made us do algebra...

My goal was to keep the shapes simple, playful and cartoony to appeal to children and their moms. I didn't want to play too much on the Mardi Gras aspect, because of the discordant color schemes related to the traditional costumes worn during the festival. I felt that it wouldn't appeal to the toddler age group, and wanted to keep a bright cartoon look. I wanted to avoid puting a mask on the character, because I wanted children and parents to relate to Orson (that's his name). I felt that since it would be a character that they've never seen before, it would be harder to get that connection if the face was obstructed. What I finally decided to do was to play up the fact that the event would take place in February. Thought of a few poses which would show character and playfulness, I came up with the idea of having Orson trying to catch snowflakes with his tongue. And it went from there.

Here's a few more photos I've accumulated throughout the past 2 weeks, all shot and digitally manipulated using the iPhone 3GS and iPhone apps. I'm noticing that the iPhone's preview image is quite off compared to when viewed on a computer monitor. Contrast and saturation levels are the main issues. This resulted in a bit of back and forth, manipulating the images using the PhotoForge app to get the desired look.

Paper pipe robots. More fun with the iPhone, this time to test out the "TiltShiftGen" app. This app attempts to simulate the optical effect of a Toy Camera (film Box Camera). There are some interesting filters which can be applied such as the shallow depth of field and a border vignette. There's also another app called the "ToyCamera" which has more presets for color tinting but doesn't allow for much control over the bluring or vignette. In this case I would prefer to use "TiltShiftGen" and adjust the colors in "PhotoForge". I know this all sounds horrible considering I have a SLR camera which I enjoy using, but considering the fact that I'm using an iPhone 3GS I'm really interested in what the hardware along with the apps can do as a whole.

All Work and No Play

This was shot with my new iPhone 3GS, using an app called "ReelMoments which is a time lapse still frame video recorder and edited with the "ReelDirector" app. The time lapse video was shot at 1 frame every 2 seconds, total film time was probably 3 1/2 hrs with about 2 hrs after editing. I wasn't successful at including audio..."ReelDirector" is still a bit buggy in the audio department. There's no option for any real post production besides the straight forward editing. I still have a slow motion app "Slowmo" and a stop motion app "iMotion" to play around with. We'll see what I can come up with.

I've been wanting to draw something with a lot of lines lately...not sure why. I find detail work helps me zone out, and hatching especially helps me loosen up my hand when I've been away from drawing for awhile. Was about to take out the India ink to work the hair. Then I wondered what hair would look like if it was straight hatched instead of contoured. The answer apparently is bandages.

Haven't tried my hand on comic book characters in awhile. I guess this sketch of Daredevil was inspired by the 23 1/2 hrs of playtime (not consecutive), it took for me to finish the full storyline in the new "Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2" videogame produced by Vicarious Visions.

In case you were wondering, I give that game a 7.5 out of 10.

Finishing up the piece I came across a dilemma. The blacks and whites were well balanced, but I felt that the rooster's facial features were getting lost. So I cheated and added color... Sometimes you just gotta know when you're beat.

Next step was to figure out what to do with a floating rooster head. As I had said previously in "step 2", I had no clue where this sketch was heading since I went in blindly. For some reason the rooster mohawk reminded me of a rockabilly style haircut. Another idea that popped into my head was to give the giant rooster head an octopus' lower body of tentacles...just for the sake of randomness. A few quick sketches later, it was decided that the former idea would win out.

Decided not to use a pure white but instead a RGB:235 gray, so that the image would be a bit softer on the eyes. I wanted to be careful with the use of the white. Using it sparingly as lighting as well as to ground and punch up certain black lines and details.

The rooster subject matter came about only after starting the piece. At the time of scribbling in the eyes and the main shape of the head I was thinking of the exercise of high contrast. Figuring I would need some sort of graphic element to punch up with black, I decided a mohawk would be an interesting element which I would be able to play around with. After a beak and a wattle later, a rooster came about.

Here's the first of a five step sketch/high contrast rendering done completely in Photoshop. The exercise was to create a piece using high contrast black & white on a midtone background, much like a charcoal/conté drawing.

This is step 5, as well as the final run for this piece. I worked out the left arm and hand, but decided not to put many crisp details so to not distract from the intended focal point, which is the face. As discussed in the previous entry comments, after posting I had felt that the piece was starting to look a little too "academic". Or as Anthony had put it "dull". Decided to add color as was suggested, bringing in a reflective light cast from the right. Although it does give the piece a more "illustrated" feel, I do think that it adds more volume to the subject matter. As well as adding more interest, by breaking up the monotony of the previous basic color theme.

Comparing between "step 2" and "step 3" I didn't realize how much of the top light I had lost while I was probably too focused on the rendering...either that or the television. Added a bit more contrast and texture, but the frog didn't look shiny/slippery enough. Decided to work on the hi-lights and add a few more coats of glaze. Think I'll take one more crack at it before throwing in the towel. It's an exercise in rendering, not actual artwork.
